Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic disease, affecting millions of people across the globe. One third of the people with diabetes will experience a skin disorder which is caused or affected by diabetes. A skin infection can occur on any area of your body and it should be addressed and treated promptly to avoid any serious consequences and complications.


 

Diabetes can cause many skin problems. Some of the effects of diabetes on the skin are:

·         Extremely dry scaly skin,

·       Irritated or itchy can lead to excessive scratching, which cause pain and discomfort- the itching can be due to damaged nerve fibers

·         White discharge

·         Red or skin coloured raised bumps

·         Bacterial infections and fungal infections like athletes foot, ring worms, yeast infections, etc

·         Psoriasis, eczema, blisters, skin spots/ lines, etc

·         Skin would be sensitive to sunburn

·     Skin can become thin, flaky, sore, red, waxy, tight, shiny and swollen looking skin in rare conditions skin thickening occurs.

·         Most of the people develop skin tags on the neck, eyelids, and armpits.  

·    Common skin infections would become worse by having high blood sugar 

        ·      Open sore/ wounds take longer time to heal

·         Yellow or brown scaly patches on and around the eyelids

 

Ways to control the effects of diabetes on the skin:

·         Keep blood sugar within recommended levels

·         Avoid taking long hot baths

·         Regularly moisturize your skin

·         Making lifestyle changes- having balanced diet

·         Practice good skin care

·         Weightloss and taking diabetes drugs which help the body use insulin better
